What does God’s throne look like? Revelation 4 and 5 and other Bible Passages

Revelation chapters 4 and 5 give us a view of God’s throne in heaven. The brilliant colors and textures are glorious and I’m sure the real thing is far beyond anything we could comprehend with our human limitations. But Revelation 4 and 5 are not the first glimpse we have of God’s throne. Here are some other Bible passages that show us God’s throne.

God’s Throne and the Ark of the Covenant

The ark of the covenant is part of the furniture in the tabernacle which is described in detail in Exodus 25. Moses is told to make it exactly according to the instructions God gives. It’s a replica of God’s throne in heaven which makes the cheribum make more sense when you compare the design of the Ark to other pictures of God’s throne in heaven. In 1 Kings 8, Solomon brings the Ark of the Covenant to the temple.

Not only is the Ark of the Covenant a replica, but God sits on it when Moses talked with Him. In Numbers 7, the articles of the tabernacle are dedicated to the Lord. The last verse of the chapter says, “When Moses entered the tent of meeting to speak with the Lord, he heard the voice speaking to him from between the two cherubim above the atonement cover on the ark of the covenant law. In this way the Lord spoke to him.” God “sat” on the throne of the Ark of the Covenant. His presence could be seen as a cloud in the day and a pillar of fire at night.

God’s Throne in Isaiah 6

Isaiah gets his commission as a prophet from God while He is seated on His throne. The creatures here look like the creatures in Revelation 4 and 5. They also say “holy, holy, holy” in Isaiah and Revelation. Read Isaiah 6 for more description.

God’s Throne in Ezekiel

In this Ezekiel 1 and Ezekiel 10, God on His throne is on the move, first to give Ezekiel his commission as prophet while he is sitting on the riverbank and then away from the temple which has been defiled by the disobedience of the nation of Judah. God’s presence is a major theme of Ezekiel. The book ends with good news–God will again dwell with His people in the future.
