When I was first studying Revelation and bracing myself for the unfamiliar, I was surprised to find so many familiar phrases and scenes of worship. So many hymns and worship songs have been inspired by verses in Revelation. I often find myself with a song stuck in my head all day after reading in Revelation.
Here are some worship songs or hymns inspired by the book of Revelation:
A New Name
There are many songs from Revelation 2 and 3 which describe what will be given to the one who overcomes or conquers including this southern gospel song and hymn A New Name Written Down in Glory. It’s upbeat and catchy!
Behold Our God
In Revelation 4:2 “Behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.” This song from Sovereign Grace Music gives us a glimpse of the throne room and praise to our God. Let His glory fill the earth!
Holy, Holy, Holy
This famous hymn is lifted from the page of Revelation 4. Listen to verse 2: Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee. Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea. Cherubim and seraphim, falling down before Thee. Which were, and art, and evermore shall be.
Is He Worthy?
In Revelation 6, John weeps because at first no one is found worthy to break open the seals of the scroll. Then the Lamb who was Slain is found worthy. Andrew Peterson mentions this in his song Is He Worthy? along with other reasons to reaffirm the worthiness of Christ.
We Shall Wear a Crown
In this gospel favorite, we sing “when the battles over we shall wear a crown in the new Jerusalem.” What a reminder of what we have to look forward to!
Handel’s Messiah
Often thought of at Christmas time, Handel’s Messiah is really about the whole life of Christ including His return. There are several sections from Revelation including the famous Hallelujah Chorus. Revelation 19:6 “Hallelujah: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.” and Revelation 19:16 “KING OF KINGS and LORD OF LORDS.” Also Revelation 11:15, “there were loud voices in heaven saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ and he shall reign forever and ever.”
But there is another powerful chorus from Handel’s Messiah that is from Revelation. The Messiah ends with the majestic Worthy is the Lamb that was Slain which includes the Amen. The lyrics come largely from Revelation 5: 9-14
Revelation 5:9-14
And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and
hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation;
And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of
them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in
them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and
ever.
