When looking for Bible reading plans, I found many New Testament reading plans in a year, but none for the Old Testament. So I decided to create my own Old Testament in a year Bible reading plan. This particular plan divides up all of the Old Testament into a reading plan so that you are reading five days a week all year long. The reading is divided up by words per day so some days there are more chapters to read than others since the lengths of each chapter differ. Thanks to Bible Reading Plan Generator for their creative website. I used their site to create the basic outline for this Bible reading plan.

Why Read the Old Testament?

There are many reasons why one would want to read the Old Testament:

• To understand Old Testament references in the New Testament. I know this was particularly true when I was reading and writing about Revelation. There are so many Old Testament references there!
• To feel the longing for a Savior. It was a long wait from Adam and Eve to Jesus. That does not mean that people in the Old Testament could not be saved. Salvation has always been given to those who have faith in God on the basis of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Some believers looked forward to the cross; we look back on it. Also, understanding the longing for Jesus’ first advent reminds us to look forward to His second coming.
• To know who our God is and where we have come from. As you read the Old Testament, you come to know who God is, how He made us and loves us and cares for us. As Gentile believers we need to know the roots of our faith family into which we have been grafted (See Galatians for more on that.) Just like any history, we can understand where we are today when we understand where we have come from.
